Some Tid Bits for the first week in October

by. Kyle Kettner

So I know I’ve been a bit football focused, but it’s been a long summer with no football and bad baseball.  I’ll admit, I’m more of a football writer than anything else, and that is most definitely what I watch the most.  You’ll get your share of Bulls basketball and I’ll touch on the Blackhawks here and there, but let’s be honest.  Hockey is one of those sports that needs to be watched.  I can recap it for you, I can get into detail, but unless you saw it, you really missed out.  Being this is the first time I’ve ever written about hockey, I’ll do my best.  It’s easily the sport I watch the least of, but I do follow the Blackhawks pretty closely.  As I said with the football blog, most of what I write is for entertainment.  I don’t know it all, I will get some stats wrong from time to time, but I’ll do my best to make this blog a good “I’m on the crapper” read.  Enjoy!

The MLB playoffs start

I am so happy to see the Pirates in the playoffs.  I don’t know how they’ll do in the NLDS against the Cardinals, but I want to see the Buccos win the whole damn thing. I know it’s a long shot, but hey, I’m a White Sox fan, so I know about long shots.  As I write this the Rays lead the Indians 3-0 in the AL wild card play-in game, and to be honest, I could care less who wins.  The Yankees aren’t in the playoffs, so that alone makes me happy.  I would love to see a Pittsburgh-Oakland World Series.  Why the hell not?? Put a couple teams in there that haven’t been there in a while.  I know they aren’t huge markets, but who gives a shit, it would be entertaining…

NBA season starts soon

Derrick Rose is back, Dwight Howard is in Houston, Kobe is rehabbing his Achilles injury, and LeBron James is still a douche.  You’ll find out as the season goes on just how much I truly despise LeBron James.  I respect his talent, but I do NOT respect his game.

I’ll touch more on LeBron ad the NBA season once it actually starts.  If you think NFL preseason is boring, try watching NBA preseason.

Blackhawks win season opener

The Blackhawks raised the Stanley Cup banner in a pre-game ceremony Tuesday night before the Capitals game.

The best part about the ceremony was easily Gary Bettman getting booed when he was announced. HA HA.  The Blackhawks also announced everyone in the organization in the ceremony, and I never realized that the team carried a “mental toughness professional” or whatever the hell they called it. That was a bit hilarious to me.  Is psychiatrist not the proper vernacular anymore?  ANYWAY, the Hawks started fast, and bailed themselves out when they needed it most in the first game of their title defense.  Brandon Bollig scored the first goal of the year for the Hawks after not scoring a goal in either of his last 2 seasons.  Kaner, Seabrook, Saad, and Johnny Oduya also scored, and Marion Hossa added an empty netter at the end.  The Hawks penalty kill struggled as the Caps scored 3 of their 4 goals on the power play, but they came up HUGE killing a 5 on 3 with just over 4 minutes to go in the 3rd.  I’ll tell you what, even though the Hawks let the Capitals stick around, you got the feeling that they were never out of control in this game.  The Hawks host the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.
