The Originals: Tangled up in Blue (S1: E3)

Klaus has returned. I’m not saying I didn’t enjoy his period of infatuation with Caroline, but it did mellow him out quite a bit. No more. Holding an Original hostage is an intolerable crime, even if he was sort of delivered as a peace offering. Klaus and Rebekah hatch a plan to steal Elijah back (it’s about time).

Rebekah meets Sophie Deveraux in front of the shop where Hayley bought the wolfsbane before she was outed. They have a little chat with Katie about who she might have told. After a bit of brutality from Rebekah, she tells them she just told one vampire, and only because she LOVES him. Who does she love, I wonder? Wait, no I don’t. She loves Marcel’s main man, Thierry.

Klaus is thrilled to hear it, and they enlist Sophie’s help to make Katie agreeable. Sophie initially refuses, but Klaus reminds her that she isn’t really in a position to be principled. (He’s so damn lovable when he’s ruthless.)

The plan is simple: Sophie will do a locator spell to find Elijah, but Davina won’t realize it because Katie will have a reason to perform a splashier, more obvious one at the same time. Davina will focus on Katie and not Sophie. (I should add that Sophie only agreed to go along because Klaus aided her in deducing that her sister was only murdered by Marcel’s thugs because Katie told Thierry where she was hiding.)

Klaus and the kid he compelled (the one Marcel made a vampire) take turns stabbing one of Marcel’s thugs with a pitchfork. Klaus is in a hurry to get any and all vervane out of the guy’s system.

Rebekah convinces Cami, the bartender Marcel fancies, to go to his fundraiser and give him another chance. She and Klaus want him good and distracted while their plan is unfolding.

Thanks to Klaus’s pot-stirring capabilities, Marcel believes the witches need to be reminded of their vulnerability. He tells Thierry to take a crew and go roust them. He wants it to be nasty.

I love a good masquerade ball, and why not? This means gorgeous vampires in gorgeous suits and gowns, intrigue and subterfuge. WITH GLITTER.

Klaus stays busy pretending to be Marcel’s good buddy, and Rebekah makes sure Marcel sees her greeting Cami. This should make him nervous, considering Rebekah threatened to kill her in the last episode, and it seems to work. Marcel goes to make sad small talk and dance with her.

In the quarter, Thierry and the crew are flipping over tables and baring their fangs at any witch they see. Thierry takes a time out to sneak into Katie’s shop and warn her to stay inside. They share a passionate kiss, and he promises it will be over soon. On his way out of the shop another vampire - the one Klaus drained - heads inside. Thierry tells him to back off, he already got it. The guy ignores him.

Moments later he drags Katie out into the open, biting her. Thierry flips out, grabs a stake, and murders him on the street. The rest of Marcel’s guys stand around looking worried. It’s against the rules to kill a vampire, especially to save a witch.

Sophie gets busy persuading Katie that the only way to save her man is with a spell. Marcel will be furious, and Thierry’s life is in danger. Katie agrees to the plan.

At the ball, Marcel is interrupted in his efforts to seduce Cami by the return of his crew. One tells him about Thierry’s transgression. Marcel loses it in front of Cami and throws Thierry into a wall, holding him by the throat. Cami starts second-guessing her decision to attend the party. Klaus, on the other hand, stands eavesdropping across the room and couldn’t look more pleased.

Marcel goes on about how he MADE Thierry a vampire, and how dare he betray that gift, and ultimately decides the appropriate punishment is 100 years in the container.

They’re on their way to punish Thierry when Katie appears in the street. Lights are sparking and she’s throwing her hands up, and Marcel looks outraged - but not worried. He starts to charge her but then falls, in pain.

Davina wakes up, panicked, and starts scribbling on a large pad of paper. Because now is the time for arts and crafts. I have to wonder, is she unable to leave that room? I mean, if she’s so protective of Marcel, I would think she would run right out the door to rescue him herself. She does try to stop Katie by interfering with some magic of her own, but it doesn’t seem to be working.

In the cemetery, Sophie is using some dirt and a map to magically locate Elijah. Rebekah ditched the party because apparently seeing Marcel dance with Cami annoyed her. She stands nearby looking impatient.

Katie overpowers Marcel, and is JUST ABOUT to deliver a killing blow when Klaus zips up behind her and snaps her neck. Boom. The spell is over, but the game is just beginning. Marcel watched Klaus save his life, which immediately restores a lot of trust.

In the cemetery Rebekah yells at Sophie about not finishing the spell because if she dies (Davina will sense her now that Katie’s dead) Hayley dies, and getting Elijah back will have been for nothing because he won’t forgive them. The plan failed.

Klaus finds Cami at a bar and sits to talk with her. Klaus, by the way, spends a fair amount of time giving Camille gooey, adoring looks. She’s sad, and they share an intense moment. She (and everyone else) thinks he’s going to kiss her, but he murmurs she needs to give Marcel another chance. She looks away, embarrassed, and talks about misreading the look. Klaus assures he she didn’t, but tells her, “we all have roles to play.” He compels her to forget Marcel’s rage, and tells her she still has feelings for Marcel.

After taking care of business with Thierry Marcel tells Klaus he’s so grateful that Klaus saved his life, and so convinced of his loyalty, he will immediately return Elijah. HAHAA, Klaus is an evil fucking genius.

When Klaus tells Rebekah the news, she isn’t happy. She recognizes that Klaus is merely serving his own end, and tells him she’s disgusted with him. He looks as though he may have hurt feelings.

Marcel goes to see Davina, who jumps all over him like a puppy. When he tells her he’s returning Elijah she tells him NO they are not returning him. She says the Originals are dangerous, and she won’t give Elijah back until she knows how to kill one. Marcel’s expression is worrisome, like maybe he realizes how neatly he’s been played. DAMN YOU, Davina. Elijah needs to be out of that box, quit having thoughts that are helpful to Marcel.

Klaus sees Hayley reading Elijah’s journals and, feeling surly, asks what his brother does to instantly endear himself to people. Hayley says Elijah was kind to her, and Klaus turns to leave looking disappointed because kindness is a trick he doesn’t know.

Hayley tells him she found out she’s having a girl (if you believe the so-called gender test). Klaus smiles a little, and Hayley continues frantically trying to translate the phrase the witch started shouting when she was investigating Hayley’s baby. Uh oh.
