AMERICAN HORROR STORY COVEN - BOY PARTS RECAP AND THOUGHTS

I really enjoyed the second episode of Coven.  It was a bit lighter than previous seasons first few episodes, however it definitely had its dark moments.  Ryan Murphy holds nothing back and this episode definitely had its share of wtf’s and should I laugh moments.  Which I did.. laugh.. I’ve said it before and I’m saying it again, I absolutely love the writing on this show!

Recapping this week, I decided it would be easier to do it by character, the same way I do True Blood.  So here goes.

Zoe/Madison

image

These two really need to find something else to do with their lives.  While Zoe stalks the internet for any info she can find on her beloved I had one conversation with you Kyle, Madison is lecturing her on how he is guilty by association, that he would have joined in on the gang rape if he had the chance.  You know, ‘cause he didn’t try to stop it or anything.

After sitting through “morning gathering” and Madison wanting to sing kumbayah after hearing Queenie’s back story, Zoe and Madison are paid a visit from two detectives, who are wondering how the girls flipped a bus.  They tell the girls that witnesses saw Madison go into a back room with one of the frat guys.  She tells him that the frat boy was trying to get her high.  The detectives also know that Zoe went to the hospital.  She just breaks down and decides that honesty is the best policy, as she tells the detectives everything, including that they are witches.  They are saved by Fiona who saves their (Zoe) stupid asses.

To thank Zoe for raping the rapist and killing him, Madison then has the bright idea of breaking into the morgue to resurrect Kyle.  They find the bodies, dismembered.  This doesn’t seem to shock Madison at all, while emotional Zoe cries and looks away.  Madison decides to make the best out of the situation, and sews all the best body parts, including Kyle’s head, together.  Casts the resurrection spell and omg nothing happens.  Just a lot of screaming because of… I don’t know what.

Zoe/Kyle

After the attempt to resurrect Kyle, Zoe stays behind to say her last goodbye, as Madison goes outside and ultimately leaves her behind because someone pulls up to the morgue.  Zoe leans down and kisses Kyle and as she we see Misty walking through the woods and seeming as though she is sensing something.

The man who pulled up is looking around the morgue, suspicious, when he sees Kyle’s sewn together new body and Zoe hiding in a corner.  That’s the last thing that guy will see.. for a while at least..not sure if he died.   Anyways, Zoe steals the guys car and decides that now is the best time to tell Frankenkyle that he died and she resurrected him.  He can’t talk and looks all rabid and crazy.

Misty Day/Zoe/Kyle

No time was wasted letting us know that Misty Day is indeed still alive.  She is hanging out in the woods, jamming to Stevie Nicks, looking like a free spirit.  It is quickly apparent that Misty is a nature and animal lover, which fits right in with her free spirit look.  Being such an animal lover, though, makes Misty enact revenge on behalf of all the alligators being hunted by the hicks in the backwoods of Louisiana.  Alligator killing karma is what it is and those two hicks find out the hard way.

Poor Misty seems to be quite lonely.  She senses the resurrection of Frankenkyle, feels connected (see theories), and is led to the backseat of the vehicle that is being driven by Zoe to who knows where, while Frankenkyle has a franken-tantrum in the front seat (good acting by Evan Peters).  She directs Zoe to a cabin, where she rubs spanish moss and alligator dung on his stitches.  That stuff looked like wet concrete.  She knows that Zoe is a witch, that’s how she was led to her, and takes an instant liking to her.  Maybe too much of a liking???  She offers to watch Kyle for Zoe and heal him.  Hoping and asking for Zoe to come back.  It doesn’t seem like Kyle wants Zoe to leave him, as he holds on to her for dear life, whimpering.

Fiona/Madame LaLaurie

image

Fiona is holding Madame LaLaurie captive in her bedroom.  She taunts her with fried chicken, determined to find out how LaLaurie is still alive.  LaLaurie cannot believe it’s been 180 years, and remembers seeing her four daughters (I thought there were only three, but there were four).  She tells Fiona about “the black devil”.  She is referring to the forever young and beautiful voodoo queen Marie Laveau.  Marie Laveau killed Madame LaLaurie’s family and locked her away for eternity.  She potion she drank was everlasting immortality, and she gets to enjoy it by being locked away forever.

Fiona/Marie Laveau

Fiona pays a visit to Marie Laveau’s hair salon to get her hair did.  Marie Laveau tells everyone to go home, and her and Fiona play tit for tat over “their kinds” dislike the other.  Marie Laveau mentions Tituba, one of her “kind”, and reminds Fiona that Tituba taught the witches everything they knew.  Tituba came from a tribe called Arawak.  She learned all the secrets of the other side from a 2,000 year old line of Shamans.  She ended up teaching the witches of Salem necromancy.  But somehow the witches betray her.

Fiona taunts and all but bribes Marie Laveau for the secret to her vitality.  Laveau won’t crack ('cause as Fiona said “good black don’t crack”), and Fiona tells her she hates her hair cut and that they will be seeing each other again.

Let’s not forget the Minotaur is alive.  And making bull sounds.

Cordelia

We are introduced to Cordelia’s husband this episode, which was a bit of a surprise.  They could have mentioned him in the first episode.  They are trying to conceive but to no avail, and instead of playing God through in-vitro, they decide to play Devil through witchcraft.  The spell consisted of the freakiest sex ever, with snakes and snake shells and blood.  Not to mention the snake(s) getting in on some of the action, slithering across their bodies as they go at it.  Creepy erotic scene that’s for sure.

Queenie/Nan

We learn Queenie’s back story this week, in which she was a fried chicken cook and burned a man who called her a fat ass.  She is pissed and burns him by sticking her arm into hot oil which, due to her human voodoo doll ways, transfers all the pain to the man.  She did call him a pencil dick first.  The incident made the papers, and people blamed her for throwing oil at him, and Cordelia found her.. Where??  We also learn that Queenie is a heir to Tituba.

Nan is hearing voices, and rushes into Fiona’s bedroom and basically tells Madame LaLaurie to STFU, as she releases her from her flimsy ties.  Madame LaLaurie and Queenie have words, and Madame LaLaurie knocks Queenie out with a candelabra and leaves.   She ends up at her old home which is now a historical site and, to her dismay, a museum of horrors.  Fiona finds her and gives her advice in her cold way and tells her that if she tries to run away again, she’s going right back to where she came from.

I still think that we haven’t seen anything yet.  These first two episodes are setting up the insanity that will hopefully come in the rest of the season.  I am definitely liking the story lines, and hope that this season isn’t too predictable.  If there’s one thing I could ever say about this show, besides that it’s simply awesome, is that it is unpredictable in every way.  It’s one of my favorite things about it, which is why I enjoy blogging about it so much.

Favorite Quotes:

“Look for the sake of peace among roommates, I’m sorry I killed your boy candy ok” - Madison to Zoe

“Is this where we all sing Kumbaya” - Madison during their morning gathering after hearing Queenie’s story

Zoe: “She’s sober.”

Madison: “Except vodka.”

“In this whole wide wicked world, the only thing you have to be afraid of is me.” - Fiona to Zoe and Madison

“I’m sorry for your loss.. wanna bite?”  Fiona to Madame LaLaurie

“Did we just marry the devil, 'cause I don’t know if I’m down with that.” - Zoe to Madison

“She couldn’t tell a love potion from a recipe for chocolate chip cookies.” - Fiona to Marie Laveau referring to Tituba

Madame LaLaurie: “Out of my way slave”

Queenie: “Who you calling slave bitch?”

“My husband too.  Him, I didn’t care, I was planning on killing him for weeks.  Poisoning his buck wheat.”  Madame LaLaurie when remembering that Marie Laveau took her family from her.

“I don’t care what kind of a monster anyone says I am.  I loved my girls in my own way.  Even the ugly one.  The moment she came out of my belly she was a shame to me.  She had the face of a damn hippo.  But I loved her just the same.” - Madame LaLaurie referring to her daughters.

WTF Moments

Misty resurrecting the alligators to eat the alligator hunter.

The freaky sex and snakes scene.

Misty appearing in the back seat of the car Zoe was driving.

The Minotaur is still alive!  - This was definitely my biggest WTF moment this episode

Observations/Questions/Theories/Random Thoughts

While Misty is meditating in the woods, and senses Zoe, we see a flash of what appears to be the man from the morgues car.  Is Misty also clairvoyant?  Is Misty the next Supreme?  Or, to play devil’s advocate (no pun intended), could Zoe be the next Supreme?  After she kissed Kyle, he came back to life.  Can Zoe resurrect the dead as well?

Since Misty has the power of resurgence, has she died before?  How old is she?  Could she have been around during the witch trials?  Could she have been taught by Tituba?  If so, could she have been one of the witches that the camera focused in on during the flashback to the Salem Witch Trials in the first episode?

Is Misty good?  Bad?  Single white femalish?

When Nan is hearing the voices, the first voice I hear is not that of a female.  It’s evil sounding, that of a man.  It almost sounds like a bull.  I’m not joking, go back and listen..

When Nan walks in to the bedroom to release Madame LaLaurie, the camera vision turns to black and white, as it focuses on LaLaurie.  It seems as if the camera focus was from Nan’s point of view, her vision.  Can Nan only see in black and white?

Why did Fiona spit in the glasses before giving them to the Detectives?

After Cordelia and her husband (what was his name?) have their freaky sex, the snakes are gone and the shells look whole.  I don’t get it.

Why did Cordelia’s eyes turn black during sex.  Reminded me of Season 2 of True Blood, when everyone was possessed by Maryanne.  Did the black eyes represent that something evil entered inside of her?  Wouldn’t be a surprise at all considering this exact thing is a common theme on AHS.

What was the betrayal that Marie Laveau mentions happened to Tituba by the witches?

When we see the Minotaur, his legs are chained together, but it didn’t look like his arms were.  And he walked into the room where Marie Laveau was.  What is the point of chaining his legs if his arms aren’t chained and he could still walk around?

How the hell is the Minotaur still alive?  And why is the bull’s head still on him.  And why does he sound like a bull?  I’m thinking that maybe he died while still enslaved.  Maybe he was resurrected (by who!) and came back an actual Minotaur.  Could it have been Misty who brought him back?? Can’t wait to see that unfold.
