The Walking Dead: Infected (S4: E2)

The mystery of the walkers concentrating their attacks on certain sections of the fence has been solved: someone is feeding them. LIKE PETS. My first thought was the Governor may be trying to ruin Rick’s happy little community. But he seems more like a kick-in-the-doors type, so I’m really not sure.

Patrick “wakes up” in the showers, trails an unsuspecting Karen back to cell block D, and bypasses her in favor of the noisy sleeper in the next cell. Of course he rips into the guy’s throat first, and the guy sort of gasps like a fish soundlessly. The zombies quietly make their way through the cell block, eating and reanimating.

Michonne plans to take off on another supply run. She’s riding off on horseback when shots ring out. She tries to get back inside the gate to help, but ends up getting grabbed by a couple of walkers and saved (barely) by Carl and Maggie. She’s injured, and Carl helps her limp back to safety. I don’t know if she was tired, or having an off day, or WHAT, but she needs to get her shit together if she’s going to hold on to her reputation as a badass.

Inside the cell block, Rick, Daryl, and Glenn get busy slaughtering walkers. Rick isn’t happy about it - he wants the simple life of a farmer, based on his discussions with Carl. He gets the job done anyway.

Carol realizes a friend of hers is doomed but before she can put a knife through his head his two little girls show up. They figure out what needs to be done and Lizzie decides SHE should end her father’s existence and CAROL DECIDES TO LET HER. Good god, Carol, I know you’re all empowered and everything but that kid is like TEN. Lizzie changes her mind and drops the knife and my anxiety is climbing as the seconds tick away and dead people are turning into walkers faster and faster, but hey. Take your time comforting the traumatized children.

They quickly realize that Patrick didn’t have any bites, and therefore died of an illness, and address the possibility of a spreading infection. They decide to quarantine any survivors who seem sick. This is especially upsetting for Tyreese, because Karen is one of the infected.

Carol tracks the girls down outside and tells them she promised to look after them and accuses Lizzie of being weak. Mika tells her that Lizzie isn’t weak, she’s messed up. We hear you, Mika. (This is, after all, an apocalypse.)

Daryl and Rick are burying the dead when Maggie starts screaming her head off. There’s another problem to sort out:

The fence is beginning to give where the walkers are pushing on it. Everybody grabs a crowbar and starts stabbing them through the fence as quickly as possible. Sasha notices a pile of dead rats and comes to the obvious conclusion that someone has been feeding the walkers.

There are too many walkers and not enough survivors, and the fence really starts to look bendy. Some people decide that the walkers snapping at the links with their rotting jaws are dangerous, but not so dangerous they shouldn’t push back on their side with their fingers exposed.

Rick, having been bolstered by Daryl telling him he gets the job done when it’s important, has a plan. He looks at the pig pens and we’re all thinking NO SURELY NOT but yes, he and Daryl load up the piggies and take them for their final long, lonely ride. It’s a brilliant tactic to distract and dispel the zombies, but I can tell you I’m not the only one who had nightmares about squealing pigs.

Later, Rick is busy dismantling the empty pig pen. Carl tells him that Carol has been teaching the kids to use knives and stuff without their parents permission, but he thinks Rick should let her. Rick says he won’t stop her, and gives Carl his gun back before holstering his own and lighting the remnants of the pig pens on fire.

Tyreese goes to romance Karen, but she isn’t in the cell, and there’s a highly suspicious trail of blood. He follows it all the way outside, where two charred bodies are smoking. There’s also a can of gasoline.

Clearly someone - twitchy Bob maybe? - was afraid of getting infected and took matters into their own hands. Being a doctor, he would understand how quickly that kind of influenza could wipe them all out, and he’s also new to the group so he hasn’t established any relationships. And WHO is feeding rats to the walkers? So many questions!
