Well this episode was quite the game changer. Also had quite a few cliffhangers. Which is normal for the Halloween episodes throughout this series. We also got a few short back stories, particularly with Marie Laveau, Spaulding and the rivalry between Fiona and Myrtle. I love flashbacks and this episode had a few of them which makes this girl happy. What makes this girl said is that Misty was MIA in this episode.. WHY???? I still stand by my word, Lily Rabe is the most underrated actress on this show. Yes, I love her, yes you might think I’m being biased, but just go back and watch (or rewatch) Season 2, and I’m sure you’ll see where I’m coming from. I’m hoping that her talents will be utilized a heck of a lot more in upcoming episodes.
Anyways, sorry about my rant. Here is my recap for Episode 4 Fearful Pranks Ensue.
Fiona
After Fiona murders Madison, she hears some banging out in Fiona’s garden witch room, and goes out to investigate. Thinking it is Cordelia, she is startled when she finds Queenie bleeding on the ground. Queenie is in pain and crying about how she couldn’t stop it (bet she regrets asking for it). Suddenly the Minotaur appears behind Fiona.. Dum da dum dum. And next thing we know, Fiona is waking Cordelia up. Somehow she was able to carry Queenie’s body into the house, up those stairs, and get her in bed. How? Does Fiona have some super strength that we don’t know about (besides being able to throw people against walls with her mind, which by the way, I would love to be able to do that shit to some people). Fiona tells Cordelia that it was the “minion of hell” who did this to Queenie. Dark magic..voodoo. Cordelia tells Fiona it had to be Marie Laveau and that it was Fiona’s fault for going to her. Since Cordelia makes it so obvi, Fiona realizes Cordelia must have went to her too for help with her infertility issues. They fight over whose fault it was that the Minotaur came a knocking (I would say it was Madame LaLauries fault not either of these two). Fiona says that by Cordelia going there for help, she showed Marie Laveau that Marie was stronger than the witches. Cordelia defends herself, telling Fiona that she went there first. Fiona says she went to show them strength, Cordelia went and showed them pain. Suddenly Queenie stopped breathing, and in the first selfless move we have seen from Fiona, she bends over Queenie and lightly blows some life back into her. Fiona tells Cordelia that they will not be bringing Queenie to the hospital like normal people do. The last thing they want is the Council showing up at their doorstep (foreshadow much??).
Seems as Fiona saving Queenie definitely took some life out of Fiona. She looks so weak and tired as she walks into her bedroom and tells LaLaurie to get out from hiding in the closet (cause no one will find you there Delphine). LaLaurie is a bit humbled as she tells Fiona that Queenie saved her from her houseboy who she tortured and abused and somehow turned into a Minotaur (actually I dont believe LaLaurie was the one who actually made him a real Minotaur). Fiona tells LaLaurie to keep her mouth shut about it. LaLaurie is afraid it will come back, but Fiona assures her it won’t.
Later, Fiona is getting dressed into this adorable black witch dress and even more adorable witch hat. Tells LaLaurie Halloween is her fave. LaLaurie has no clue what Halloween has become since her time of lighting bonfires and putting food out as offerings to keep demons away (is that really what people used to or still believe??). She insults Fiona by telling her she looks beautiful (yup, totally mean right). But the ever vitality loving Fiona was hoping she was going to say young. One track mind Fiona.
Zoe/Kyle
Poor Kyle seems bored. So to pass the time, he decides to do what any normal Frankenstein would do. Bang his head on a tub for kicks. Zoe comes running in telling him not to do that. Totally tub blocking him. When she says his name he tells her “Kyle. No Kyle”. Even he is smart enough to realize he is not Kyle anymore. She tries to blot some blood away, doing a terrible job if she was being serious about it I might add, and apologizes again to him for, I am assuming, creating the new him. He wipes a tear from her eye, and she decides that he is hungry. What might a Frankenstein want to eat? She decides Tuna is good. She finds some rat poison in the cabinet and it seems as if she contemplates using it or not. Next thing we know, she is walking back into the room but he’s gone. No where to be seen. She runs out to the porch, and all she sees are trick or treaters. Uh oh. She better find his (or another frat boys) ass asap with all these kids running around. But what does she do? She goes back to Miss Robicheaux’s, that’s what she thought was the smartest thing to do in that situation.
Hank
Who is Hank you ask? Exactly, who the F is Hank again and why did he get so much screen time this episode? Not only a lot of screen time, but his own damn story line?? And now his own character recap on my blog?? UGH, it’s killing me, but I have to write about it since it took up sooo much time!
So Hank is Cordelia’s husband. We met him once before, when he was having freaky snake sex with his wife. We learn this episode that he is cheating on his wife. With a young girl, Kaylee, who he met on a Thomas Kincade forum. ** SIDE NOTE ** Love love Thomas Kincade’s are work! My sister and mom bought my daughter these GORGEOUS butterflies with his art work covering them. Love!** END SIDE NOTE**
Poor Cordelia thinks her husband is about to meet with Phil Underwood (who?) but no he is meeting Kaylee. For the first time. He opens the door to his hotel room to see young Moira from Season One (Kaylee) standing there. They immediately have sex, and he is scary as crap in bed. Seriously I would have ran the hell out of that room so fast. Kaylee didn’t seem to mind though, as they talk about Halloween and last year’s costumes. Hank tells her last year he was a monster. I’m pretty sure he is this year as well.
Hank and Kaylee decide to have some vending machine soup and burritos. Sounds scrumptious. They get ready to eat and she tells him that she really likes him. He shoots her in the head. Huh??
Spaulding
It’s about damn time Denis O'Hare got some serious screen time. Although his character is creeeeepppy as hell! And needs to clean and cut his fingernails, ew!
Poor Spaulding seems lonely.. So lonely that he hugs scarecrows. Spaulding also likes to have tea parties. With dolls. And dead movie stars. Who doesn’t?
We get to relive the murder of Madison but through Spauldings eyes. His tea party is interrupted when he hears Fiona and Madison arguing. After killing Madison, Fiona tells him to take care of the body. He rolls Madison up in a rug. Clink, clink, clink goes those adorable heels of hers.
We learn that Spaulding cut out his own tongue. To protect himself and Fiona. He had a spell placed on his tongue to speak nothing but the truth. So he did the only thing he could do. Cut it out.
The Council and the Coven
We finally meet the council this week, after Nan summons them because she can no longer “hear” Madison. The Council shows up while Cordelia is tending to Queenie. Cordelia greets them in her middle aged night clothes. Because the council only arrives under the gravest circumstances, Cordelia, who is apparently drinking the Zoe kool-aid, blurts out what happened to Queenie. When she realizes that is not why they are there, she does some more throwing up of the mouth (no pun) and confesses to going to see Marie Laveau for help. Fiona walks in and tells her what she seems to tell everyone.. shut it..
The Council sits and explain that the punishment for murdering a Salem descendant is death by fire. They start asking the Coven, individually, questions about Madison
First up - Cordelia. Cordelia tells the Council that she last saw Madison yesterday. That she is a spirited girl and her staying out all night is not unusual. The Council apparently has better things to do than watch TMZ . If they had watched TMZ they would know that Madison has been to rehab multiple times (channeling Lindsey Lohan there writers?) and has spent more time at the Academy than she has in rehab.
Next Up - Zoe. One of the members of the Council, Myrtle questions Zoe about Madison’s powers and if she seems more powerful. Zoe says she got that thing. She’s a movie star.
Then Comes - Queenie. Queenie clearly doesn’t like Madison too much. She tells the Council that Madison is a bitch who is trouble and that Madison would even hit on the grim reaper (see quotes).
Here she goes again - Cordelia. Myrtle continues to question about Madison’s powers and if she has developed any new ones. Cordelia tells her that she is more focused on teaching Madison about controlling her powers, not developing new ones. She then notices her rug is gone and states it aloud.
Lets not forget about - Nan. Nan is carving pumpkins as the Council questions her. Nan of course knows first hand that Madison has (had) powers she didn’t know she had. Innocent Nan tells them how Madison lit the neighbor’s curtains on fire with her mind.
Flashback time - Fiona, Spaulding and Myrtle. I love flashback time. So before flashback, Myrtle is telling Fiona she sucks as a Supreme. She runs from her duties as Supreme. She says that Fiona was the last to see both Madison and Anne Lee. In comes the flashback. In a scene which mirrors the current coven reality, the council is questioning Fiona about Anna Lee. Young Fiona tells them that the last time she saw her, Anna Lee was leaving with a bottle of wine to use as a final peace offering. The Council assumes that it has something to do with the truce between Anna Lee and Marie Laveau. Next they hold a party and announce Fiona as the next Supreme. It is immediately apparent that young Fiona and young Myrtle have a rivalry. Myrtle is obviously not happy with Fiona being the new Supreme and tells a friend that Fiona is getting away with murder. A younger Spaulding overhears Myrtle telling her friend that she enchanted Spaulding’s tongue to make it incapable of speaking a lie. He leaves a note for Fiona to meet him in the bathroom and tells her that he has always loved her (throwback to their Season 1 characters). He then cuts out his tongue.
Back to reality - Fiona, Spaulding, Myrtle and Cordelia. Myrtle tells Fiona she needs to pay for everything she has done. She calls Spaulding into the room and tells him to write down the name of the witch who did this to him. After a few glances towards Fiona, he writes a name and hands it to Myrtle. She opens it as she talks some shit to Fiona, and freaks out when she reads the name. Myrtle Snow. Of course it’s her fault! I loved this part. She has a crazy freak out moment which was awesome. Cordelia actually stands up for her neglectful mother, telling Myrtle there was no way Madison was the next Supreme. The Supreme is in impeccable health, and Madison had a heart murmur. Myrtle tells Cordelia she is blind to the ways of her mother.
Cordelia/Fiona
Delia and Fiona go to the bar to celebrate their victory. Delia wants to play a game of truth. 3 questions, 3 honest answers for the each of them. Cordelia asks Fiona why she hates Hank (gee I wonder). Fiona says Hank reeks of bullshit and that she cannot understand how Cordelia doesn’t see it. Cordelia then asks her mother if she killed Madison. Unbeknownst to Cordelia, Fiona loses this game of truth as she lies and says she did not. But wait, now that we know Madison is not the new Supreme, Fiona asks Cordelia who the next Supreme is. Cordelia tells her mother that she is obsessed and asks the bartender (“Mr. Man”) for another drink.
Cordelia must have had one too many and is vomiting in the bathroom. She is attacked by someone who is cloaked in black. They throw something in her face. I am assuming acid. It looked like it burned.
Marie Laveau
The opening scene of this episode showed a flashback of a young black boy riding his bike home to/from school. He was being followed by a car with three grown ass white men in there. They corner him..to be continued..We then see the young boys mother working in Marie Laveaus salon (still flashback). She is telling the ladies that work there about how that day was her son’s first day in a white school, now integrated. Marie doesn’t think it’s a great idea. We then learn (actually see) that the young innocent boy had been hanged. Marie does not take kindly to this and in a spell that consists of lots of snakes, wicker baskets, a piece of cloth, pearls, cutting snakes and fire, oh let’s not forget about a bongo player, she raises the dead. Not raises the dead Misty Day style. More like raising the dead The Walking Dead style.. but more menacing looking. The voodoo zombies attack and tear apart the men who killed that young boy. It was a sweet revenge well deserved. Marie Laveau is the shit!
In present time, Marie Laveau is in her salon and shows her caring side when she finishes styling a customer’s hair, and tells her to keep her money in her purse. A package is delivered, and one of the women who work there opens it up. Surprise! It’s the severed head of the minotaur. And it blinks! It’s still alive. Of course it is, it’s immortal! Holy shit! Oh man, it’s on. Marie is going to do the same thing she did all those years ago to those three men who murdered the boy. As she is gathering all the voodoo props her friend reminds her that she is the one who made the truce with Anna Lee all those years ago. Marie was the hero. Peace was made. Marie Laveau tells the lady that the truce is over and either the girl is with her or against her. She performs her voodoo spell, was even able to get the bongo guy there again, and raises the dead.
Madame LaLaurie/Queenie/Nan/Zoe
Madame LaLaurie is showing her softer side this week, which in my opinion isn’t worth anything She pays Fiona a very nice compliment and is very thankful that Queenie saved her. She tells Queenie that she doesn’t know how to thank her. Queenie don’t really want to hear it and tells her she better work on it.
Nan, Zoe and Queenie are wondering what the hell happened with Madison. Zoe thinks they should be out there looking for her (you should be out there looking for Frankenkyle, Zoe). Nan reminds her that Fiona told them to stay inside. Meanwhile LaLaurie is busy tending to the trick or treaters for the first time ever. Remember, she is used to lighting bonfires and putting food out to keep as offerings to keep demons away. It’s pretty comical to watch her react to the kids. Zoe and Nan come down at some point and then who happens to show up.. Luke, the new boy next door. With him he brings cookies for Nan. He totally digs her. Suddenly there is a loud hard knocking at the front door. LaLaurie opens it and there stands three extremely creepy looking zombie girls. LaLaurie’s own daughters. Whaaaatt? LaLaurie drops the candy bowl in fear and shock and closes the door. And that’s not even the cliffhanger.. the cliffhanger is that behind the three LaLaurie sisters is a hoard of voodoo zombies making their way on to the front lawn of the academy.
This season is just getting better and better. It is completely different from the previous two. Although I loved the creep factor and twists in the first two seasons, I like the atmosphere and the filming styles of this season (not as much as season two’s Anne Frank episodes though). I love how this show is a full story in one season, how it could change so drastically from year to year and still work.
