The Vampire Diaries: Monster’s Ball (S5: E5)

Maxfield is experimenting on Jesse, who has no idea what’s happening despite Maxfield basically telling him he was making him a vampire before jabbing him with the needle and then taunting him with blood samples and bright lights for days. Maxfield’s conclusion is that Jesse is the perfect candidate for something. But what?

Elena has returned to Whitmore, because Bonnie wanted her to. She’s hoping to talk to Dr. Maxfield and find out why he lied his ass off on Megan’s death certificate. She thinks this will distract her from the loss of her best friend. Caroline isn’t having as much trouble, seeing as Tyler came back and they’re spending a lot of time shacked up in the dorm having sex. Mostly because whenever Caroline tries to actually say something Tyler transforms into an asshat. Get a clue, Caroline.

Elena catches some dude mourning Megan in public. He’s hunched over her photo, looking morose, and has no time to deal with Elena. He won’t even tell her his name.

Silas is still harassing Nadia, asking her to turn over Katherine. She mouths off until he tells her he may not have the power to read her mind, but he CAN track her mobile phone. She grabs Katherine and makes a run for it, but not before telling Katherine that Silas isn’t the better option because to make himself human/witch again he needs to drain every drop of her blood.

Damon meets with Jeremy and Ghost Bonnie in secret to discuss the possibility of using Silas’s death to bring Bonnie back to life. Bonnie is completely against the idea, because magic always has a price blah blah Bonnie WE KNOW, but of course Damon can’t hear her and Jeremy is good to go with the plan because he can’t get any sweet loving from Ghost Bonnie.

Damon and Silas meet at the Grill to form a tentative partnership. Silas says he wants Damon to kill Stefan in exchange for letting Bonnie benefit from his death.

Nadia and Katherine are eating at a greasy spoon diner on the run. Nadia offers Katherine her freedom in exchange for a few unanswered questions. She seems interested in Katherine’s character, mostly - how could she kill her best friend and her daughter to save her own ass? Katherine doesn’t display a shred of remorse, and when Nadia accuses her of killing her mother, too, she realizes she isn’t going to be given her freedom. They get up to leave and Katherine swipes a cane, breaks it, and shoves it into Nadia’s chest before making a run for it. (Is it me, or is human Katherine surprisingly strong?)

Whitmore is having a ball. What better way to lure all of the warring characters into a localized area and let the drama unfold? Stefan is James Dean, Caroline and Tyler and Bonnie and Clyde (not that I’m complaining, I will never complain about Tyler in a fedora), Elena is Ann Boleyn and Damon is King Henry.

He confronts Elena about avoiding him; she admits to feeling guilt because she was having the summer of her life while Bonnie was dead, so much fun she didn’t even realize Bonnie was dead. Damon seems to buy it, but I’m not. I think she’s feeling guilty for almost jumping Stefan by Wickery Bridge. Confession is good for the soul, Elena.

Elena sees the mystery mourner and goes to talk to him. He just wants to be left alone, so she compels him to spill his guts. He says he didn’t kill Megan, but everyone he cares about dies. Elena looks almost apologetic. She wipes his memory and sends him on his way, but not before learning his name is Aaron.

Qetsiyah, now Tessa, shows up as Cleopatra. She makes her way over to Stefan, unable to resist his pretty face, but Damon rescues him and takes him to an empty room. Stefan complains that Damon is ruining his game; Damon tells him the last guy Tessa hit on is still paying for it, and snaps his brother’s neck abruptly.

Silas pops in and steals Stefan’s clothes. He explains that with Stefan temporarily out of order, the psychic link Tessa created is broken and he can use mind control again. Damon seems doubtful until Silas tells him exactly what his thoughts are, including a concern about the pleasure he feels breaking Stefan’s neck.

If I’m understanding this correctly, there is a mystical anchor keeping the other side in place. Therefore, if Silas dies, he will remain in the purgatory Tessa created, rather than passing on and being at peace with Imara. He needs to find the anchor and destroy it, and thus the other side, so he can die properly. He flirts and dances with Tessa, trying to get her to talk to him about it naturally. He thinks he’s pretty special, and eventually admits that his ego is huge, and he wanted to hear Tessa say she still loved him. She looks horrified, but he uses mind control before she can do anything about it. He asks about the anchor, but she says she’s looking for it, too, and she came to the party because her talisman is at Whitmore and it will boost her power sufficiently that she should be able to locate the anchor. He tells her to get on it and compels her to forget their conversation. She thanks him for the dance, looking dazed.

Katherine finds Nadia in an alley, still staked. Ms. Pierce is curious, and asked why Nadia lied to her. Nadia says that Katherine really did kill her mother, and proceeds to tell the story of how Katherine became a vampire. She confesses that she is Nadia Petrova, and Katherine is her mother. I was not expecting this at all, and am VERY interested to see how it will play out. Although truthfully I feel bad for Nadia, given Katherine Pierce’s record of screwing over those closest to her.

Elena seizes an opportunity to dance with/question Maxfield. He tells her he had to falsify Megan’s cause of death - he can’t alarm people by admitting the truth. He also tells Elena that people at Whitmore (ooooh, mysterious!) are watching her too closely, and that she should drop out and return to Mystic Falls. He ends the dance.

Silas finds Tessa just as she learns the location of the anchor. He’s using mind control to get it for himself when Stefan wakes up. Pissed, he snaps Damon’s neck and escapes. Silas’s mind control is ruined, and Tessa quickly punishes him by stopping blood flow to his heart and turning him back into a sickly gray carcass. Stefan stomps in, rips his daylight ring from Silas’s finger, and tells Tessa that Damon and Silas were working together. (I kind of love this new, self-serving Stefan.)

Caroline finds Tyler packing in her dorm. He told her at the dance that he wants Klaus to pay for killing his mother, and doesn’t want to be with Caroline simply because they have Klaus’s permission. He’s leaving. Caroline begs him to stay, telling him to love her more than he hates Klaus. He starts to leave, and she warns him that if he does, it’s over for good. He does anyway, and Caroline does the ugly cry. Poor Caroline. If only there was a gorgeous, accented, all-powerful hybrid who wanted to nurse your wounds! Oh, WAIT.

Damon and Elena are at the Salvatore place. Silas has become a grotesque couch ornament. Damon says Silas has to be a witch, and human again, before Bonnie can benefit from his death. Katherine, having been summoned by Damon, waltzes in. She sees Silas desiccated and gives Damon credit for doing something right for a change. Then, realizes his plan, she panics and pleads for her life.

Damon, still bitter that Katherine never loved him the way he loved her, feeds her to Silas dispassionately. Elena looks disturbed, then intrigued. Silas begins to revive and Katherine’s lifeless body falls artfully to the floor.

They both hear her heartbeat after a moment, and both of their faces say WHAT THE HELL? Mine too.
