American Horror Story - Ep. 5 “Burn, Witch, Burn!” - Recap

By : V

I always say that American Horror Story is one of those shows which you either love it or hate it.  There’s no in between.  This episode stayed true to that.  Either you loved it or you hated it.  I loved it.

This might be a long one, so let’s get started breaking it down.

All Hallows Eve 1833 - Madame LaLaurie’s Masquerade Party and the Aftermath

Wow.  Back in 1833, on All Hallows Eve, Madame LaLaurie threw a masquerade party.  She introduces the Governor’s son, Jacques (Jack, John?  Everyone said his name differently!) to her eldest daughter Boquita (sp?).  LaLaurie has a game she would like Jacques to play.  Guess What’s In The Bowl.  Bowl 1- Jacques guesses she has been peeling grapes all day.  Turns out to be the eye balls ripped out of her tortured slaves heads.  While they were alive.  Bowl 2-  Jacques is hoping they are sausage links.  No not sausage links you poor naive man, it’s the intestines of the tortured slaves.  Jacques runs off, afraid.  Who could blame him.

Later, LaLaurie’s daughters are discussing how they will never get a man with their mother in the way and plot/fantasize about killing her.  Madame LaLauries ears must have been ringing, as she interrupts their planning, telling them to go back to the party.  Next thing we know, Bastian and “two strong slaves” are waking the girls from their sleep to bring them to the torture room.  There, the girls get the same treatment as the slaves.  One even gets her leg broken.  Madame LaLaurie tells them they will be locked up for a year there.

Present Time - Halloween- Miss Robichaux’s Academy

Madame LaLaurie tells the coven girls, and neighbor boy Luke, that all hell has come upon their doorstep.  Zoe is wondering what the voodoo zombies are, and Nan tells them she can’t hear the zombies, they are dead.  Zoe finally steps up, tells the girls to close all the curtains and lights.  She tries calling Fiona, only gets voice mail.  She wonders if she should call the police and Queenie shuts that idea down saying Fiona would not be happy about that and they should be more afraid of Fiona then the voodoo zombies (very smart Queenie).  Innocent never been out of mommy’s sight neighbor boy Luke is insisting it’s neighbors playing a prank and thinks he can handle them.  He goes outside.

Luke walks up t he zombies and tries to get a reaction out of them.  Nothing.  The voodoo zombies just stare blankly, not moving.  Two random rowdy guys appear out of nowhere, totally impressed (unknowingly) with the “prosthetics” on the zombies, as Luke starts to realize that these zombies are not neighborhood kids.

Present Time-  Marie Laveau’s Voodoo Room

In a room full of bloody dead animals, Marie Laveau is levitating.  Her eyes turn white as she says “Begin”.    She is clearly controlling her army of voodoo zombies.

Back to Miss Robichaux’s Academy

When Marie Laveau says begin the voodoo zombies begin.  They kill the two random guys.  Luke starts running back to the house but gets hit in the back and falls to the ground.

The house is surrounded and Zoe says they need to go upstairs if they can’t go outside.  ‘Cause that’s always what you do in a horror movie.  She calls out for Spaulding and tells him they need to barricade themselves in his room.  He shakes his head no (for obvious reasons).  It is then that it is noticed that Nan is gone.

Nan is outside trying to help Luke.  They make it to a car and lock themselves in.  The voodoo zombies surround the car and start smashing the windows in.  Zoe, who definitely deserves some props this episode, takes the zombies attention away by clanking pots together.  But Zoe definitely didn’t think her plan through, and now the zombies attention is on her.  She runs into what looks like the garden room area (is that a shed??)

Inside the academy, LaLaurie is scolding Queenie on how she shouldn’t be out of bed.  She tells Spaulding to keep an eye on Queenie and goes downstairs to get some ice.  While in the kitchen, LaLaurie hears something outside, grabs a knife, and calls out to it.  She sees her oldest daughter, Boquita, zombified outside the same window where she saw the Minotaur.  She decides to let her zombie daughter in.  Who does that!  She is talking to Boquita like she could understand her or something, even touches her face, but Boquita strangles her.

Queenie is worrying about LaLaurie and tells Spaulding to go see what’s going on.  She hears Spaulding get attacked in the hallway, and peeks out the door to see what’s going on.  She sees and quickly closes the door.  That’s when zombie Boquita comes smashing through the door with a candelabra.  In this AWESOME scene, Queenie does some quick thinking (although it didn’t work out the way she thought).  She grabs a pair of scissors and stabs herself in the shoulder.  It doesn’t kill Boquita, so Queenie slashes her own throat.  Boquita’s throat gets slashed as well, but again, it doesn’t stop her.   But someone does stop her.  Madame LaLaurie stabs Boquita.  Boquita goes down.  Wow!  LaLaurie saved Queenie’s life!  Yeah, still not redeemable though.  LaLaurie breaks down and  Queenie consoles her.

Back outside, Luke is starting to bleed out, and Nan tries to get him out of the car back into the house.  Of course he falls, and the zombies are getting closer, closer, they are right there!  That’s when The Zoe Chainsaw Massacre begins.  In another AWESOME scene which totally pays homage to many other horror movies, Zoe chops all the zombies up with the chainsaw.  It was awesome!  The effects were incredible!  Nan and Luke are able to get back in the house.  Just when it appears as if Zoe killed all the zombies, she gets cornered by one.  Of course, again playing homage to so many horror movies, the chain saw gives out.  So Zoe, somehow knowing she could do this yet not knowing she could do this, raises her hand and says to the zombie “Be in your nature” and the zombie falls to the ground.  What the?

Back in Voodoo Room

At the same moment that Zoe says “Be in your nature” Marie falls to the ground from her levitation and realizes that she underestimated the power of the coven.

Meanwhile at The Hospital

After her attack, Cordelia is brought to the hospital.  Fiona is popping pills in the waiting room like it’s no one’s business.  A Doctor tells her that he thinks the burns on Cordelia’s face were caused by sulfuric acid.  The acid burned through the optic nerves, and they were unable to save her eyesight.  Fiona flips out on the doctor like it’s his fault or something and he opts not to call the police which was very nice of him I might add.

Fiona sits with Cordelia for awhile as her pill haze comes down apparently, because she decides to pop some more.  Damn are you trying to kill yourself? Chill.. anyways, she decides to take a walk around the hospital, which is creepy as shit, and she is able to get into the medication room with a key pass.  Huh?  She steals a huge stash of pills and even shoves some in her mouth while in there!  Someone needs rehab.. She wanders around the hospital some more and bumps into a half naked old man who tells her “You didn’t throw that acid but you might as well have."  Umm, okay…?

Fiona finds her way into a hospital room occupied by a young woman and her stillborn baby.  Fiona tells her that the baby is/was a girl.  She brings the stillborn to the young girl and basically forces the girl to hold the baby, ignoring her cries of protests that she doesn’t want to see the baby.  Fiona tells her to talk to her, tell her you love her more than the whole world, that she’s the most beautiful baby, that you will never leave her, that you’ll be her mother until she dies.  Makes her say that last part twice.  She then places her hand on the baby’s head and walks out as the baby is revived.

Later, the Thomas Kincade forum killer shows up at the hospital after driving four hours.  Hank and Fiona have a childish tit for tat about who loves Cordelia more.  Fiona tells Hank he’s just going to leave Delia now that she’s blind, and it appears that this is Hank’s first time at hearing this news.  A nurse comes in and tells them that one of them has to leave.  Fiona gives Hank fifteen minutes to visit with his wife, and then she wants him gone.

Oh so faithful Hank leans over his suffering wife, and tells her he won’t leave her.  He tells her he loves her so much (barf).  He touches her hand and she wakes up.  Wakes up to visions of her husband sleeping with Kaylee.

The next day - Back at the Academy

After the coven burns the zombies in the yard, the Council appears.  They accuse Fiona for disregarding and neglecting the coven’s well being.  They want her to step down as Supreme and Fiona says that it’s just so convenient for Myrtle, being that she didn’t inherit the supremacy she is now going to steal it.  She then accuses Myrtle of the acid attack and even killing Madison.  Apparently, Myrtle was in town when Madison disappeared.  Checked in at some hotel under the name "Jennifer Wooly”.  She also claims to have seen Myrtle at the hospital, with a black cloak on, in the elevator.  She tells Myrtle she’s been caught red handed, while pulling the red glove of her hand.  What is revealed is the acid burns on Myrtle’s hand.  The Council, along with their Supreme, agree to burn the witch.  In this case, the witch being Myrtle.   And burn she does.  At the stake, with an audience which consisted of the coven girls, the council members, the albino body guards, and Fiona.

After the audience leaves the burn site, leaving Myrtle’s body to rot and be eaten by animals, Misty appears and resurrects her.

Later, Fiona is popping some more pills, as this is apparently a daily habit, and we learn that Fiona asked Queenie to stick her hand in a glass of acid to frame Myrtle, which she did, and is how those acid burns appeared on Myrtle.  Whaaattt!!!  Queenie is feeling guilty and Fiona butters her up a little, even telling her she could be the new Supreme.  Queenie falls for it, hook line and sinker.

Spaulding’s Room

Spaulding’s room is getting quite stinky, and he tries to cover it up with spray, which is not going to work.  He opens up the trunk that holds Madison’s body, now dressed in that old white dress we saw in last week’s episode.  He has a hard time pulling her out, and ends up pulling her arm off.  LOL

This was definitely my favorite episode so far this season.  It reminded me of the reason why I first fell in love with this show.  The insanity, the crazy camera angles, the campy feel, the acting, the music, the comedic relief, the homage to horror movies.  This episode was filled with all of that and more.

Grade:

A
