Amara (previously spelled incorrectly, sorry!) is human after sticking a chunk of glass in Silas’s neck and drinking the cure. This poses a problem to those who want to bring Bonnie Bennet back from the other side, because not only is Amara still the anchor but she’s vulnerable and Silas wants to kill her as soon as possible. Because he loves her and feels bad that she went crazy, or because he’s pissed she spoiled their reunion by attacking him – who can tell? He tells Damon he has no intention of bringing Bonnie back, because he wants to watch his relationship with Elena fall apart. (Does anyone else think Silas and Tessa deserve each other?)

Elena is giving Stefan affectionate wakeup calls, apparently because she always wants the brother she isn’t currently dating. She hands him coffee and makes a jealous comment about Tessa before telling him she wants them to start over, since he can’t remember the way things were. Except he does have his memories back, and lets Elena know. She’s thrilled, because Stefan remembers how he felt about her and it’s THE BEST THING EVER. This is why I prefer Katherine. At least she’s direct, and honest about her selfish nature. When Stefan explains to Damon and Elena that, you know, it’s not exactly a GIFT to be remembering how he was tortured over and over all summer long, she looks like his statement hurt her feelings. I rest my case.
Jeremy goes to feed Amara and realizes she can see Bonnie, and even touch her. The anchor exists in both worlds, and NO WONDER Amara went crazy. She spent two thousand years locked in a box where she had only herself and the deceased for company.

They hatch a plan to ask Tessa to make Bonnie the anchor, instead of Amara. Tessa wants Amara to die, and Silas to be trapped on the other side, and they need an anchor for that to happen. Bonnie is willing, and everyone thinks it’s a splendid idea. Tessa says she needs a lot of power for the spell to work – maybe the combined blood of three doppelgangers?
Katherine is informed by Maxfield that she’s aging, and that’s all there is to it. She lived for several hundred years longer than she was supposed to, and now time is catching up to her. It isn’t possible to fix. Katherine does NOT look happy. The poor girl didn’t even want the cure to start with, and according to Maxfield she’s got a few months to live at most.
She’s also avoiding Nadia. I’m betting she doesn’t want to explain to her only child that they just found each other but OOPS, she’s already dying. Nadia shows up anyway, and uses her vampire strength to force Katherine to spend a little quality time. Caroline is confused about what’s going on, but too worried about Jesse not returning her calls to care very much. (Jesse is in a lab, busy being a vampire experiment. You would think Caroline would realize that not only is he ignoring her calls, but he’s vanished from his classes and campus in general.)
The doppelgangers are rounded up in the Salvatore mansion so Tessa can perform the spell. Katherine immediately lets her know she has no interest in saving Bonnie or any of the other crap, but she wants Tessa to stop the aging process and save her life. Tessa agrees to it.

She has Bonnie’s spell book for the transfer, and she cuts the palm of each doppelganger to use their blood as a power source. She’s in the middle of her chant when the lights flicker, wind howls, and the power goes out. Elena asks what’s going on (really?) and Tessa says it’s Silas. When everything calms down, Amara is missing.
Silas finds Tessa and stabs her with a fire place poker. He’s done messing around. He wants her out of the way so he can kill Amara, destroy the other side, and then kill himself so they can live happily ever after as spirits at peace (or something to that effect).
Except Stefan hates Silas, and he’s having some bad hallucinations, and he’s hoping that killing the source of his agony will help him get back to normal so he’s no longer teetering on the edge of becoming the Ripper. He kidnaps Amara and drags her to the woods and calls Silas to let him know if he wants his one true love, he better come and get her.
Meanwhile, Katherine isn’t healing from the cut on her palm. She’s alone and clearly miserable, and Elena offers to heal her by giving her some blood. Katherine eagerly accepts, but immediately chokes it back up. Her body is rejecting vampire blood, which is another charming side effect of the cure. This also means she can’t die with vampire blood in her system, and then come back as the badass vampire she used to be. Damn.
In the woods, Silas finds Amara tied to a tree. She claims she still loves him, but she can’t live anymore. She’s nuts and tired and wants to die. He understands, since he’s pretty nuts himself, and they share a passionate kiss before he goes to stab her. Mid-stab Stefan grabs him by the throat and pins him to a tree. Instead of doing the smart thing and breaking his fragile human neck right away, he taunts Silas and asks him how it feels not to breathe. Silas twitches his witchy wrist and Stefan falls back, to the ground. He’s not down for long, and kills Silas the second chance he gets.
Bonnie tells Jeremy it’s hopless, and he says he loves her, and about that time they realize they can feel each other and Elena and Caroline can see her. Big, happy reunion! The spell worked! YAY! Oh, wait, what about potential pitfalls? Nah, it’s probably fine.
In the woods, Amara fusses over Silas’s corpse before stabbing herself. Damon freaks out, begging her to hold on just five more minutes, but she’s done.
Elena asks Stefan if it worked, if killing Silas made him ALL BETTER (you know, despite being repeatedly drowned while she spent the summer getting it on with Damon). He sort of looks at her like, how the hell did I fall for such an idiot? He says he thinks he’ll be okay. He also says he kept hoping that she and Damon would save him. He kept believing the safe would open and they would be there, but they never were. They both look like the feel pretty bad about it.
Inside, Katherine finds Tessa and demands she keep her word. Unfortunately, Tessa is dying after stabbing herself some more. She says she learned her lesson about playing with immortality (HA!) and won’t help Katherine. She dies.

For some reason Bonnie is alone by the fire, even though she’s able to see, hear, and touch the people she loves for the first time in months. Tessa shows up, dead, and looks very evil and pleased as she explains that she’s dead, and she’s supernatural. Any supernatural dead being needs to pass through the anchor to reach the other side, and by the way it hurts like HELL. Bonnie has time to look as though she should have considered the pitfalls of their arrangement before Tessa grabs her arm and disappears and she starts screaming in agony. (I repeat: NO WONDER Amara lost her mind.)
Stefan is in the woods digging graves when he starts hallucinating about Silas again. He drops the shovel and falls. He begs out loud to be okay, and not to lose his mind. It doesn’t seem to be working. I think we can expect the return of the Ripper very soon.
