Maxfield has been busy doing experiments on Jesse. He’s been feeding him juiced up Augustine vampire blood and keeping track of his transition from man to vampire, which has taken a total of fourteen days. Except, OOPS, amped up on Augustine blood Jesse is stronger and faster than Maxfield (which I guess is a surprise to him?) and breaks free.
Bonnie meets Elena and Caroline in their dorm room, and they’re all very happy and excited that Bonnie isn’t dead anymore and has a new haircut that’s awesome. Unfortunately she’s not a witch anymore because she can’t be a witch AND a supernatural anchor, but Elena and Caroline are going to make everything better by inviting a bunch of college guys over and feeding everyone a lot of booze. Bonnie decides to go “register for classes,” which is actually code for “jump Elena’s little brother.”

Turns out there’s no shortage of newly dead supernatural beings, because Bonnie sees a sweet old lady and tries to make a break for it, but the lady gets in her way and says she’s ready and grabs Bonnie’s arm. Bonnie doubles over, screaming in pain. Aren’t you glad you thought this whole anchor business through, Bonnie Bennett? (I mean, she isn’t a witch anymore so she lost the one thing that made her useful to everyone.)
Elena tells Damon to invite Stefan to the party they’re throwing. Damon is doubtful Stefan will want to come. But wait, Elena bought bourbon! That will make everything better! Damon finds Stefan in pretty bad shape, because he’s still hallucinating about drowning a bunch of times. He can tell his brother is in a bad way, but Stefan won’t talk about it.
At the Mystic Grille, Katherine wants more drinks but Matt wants to cut her off and send her on her way. She realizes he’s preoccupied with his possession video and offers to translate because she can speak Czech. She explains he has a Traveler in his head, and after a quick Q&A guesses that Nadia is the girl who followed him back from Europe.
Jesse calls Caroline from his dorm room, freaking out because he’s starving and he doesn’t want to hurt anyone. He begs her to come right away, because his roommate is about to get back. Guess who the sexy, athletic charmer bunks with? Weird, shy, unlucky Aaron is Jesse’s roommate. Way to simplify things, writers. Caroline arrives just as Jesse is snacking on Aaron, and breaks it up.
Jesse explains that Maxfield turned him and experimented on him. Elena shows up with blood bags and wants to heal Aaron (I would have thought that would have been first on the agenda) but Caroline suggests Jesse do it. They want him to be aware of everything he can do as a vampire.
Katherine, still drinking, asks Stefan to join her. At first he says no, but let’s face it guys have a hard time turning Katherine Pierce down. (I would have trouble turning her down.) He tells her about remembering drowning and she diagnoses him with PTSD. She can help him, but of course she wants something in return. She introduces him to Nadia.
At the party, Elena and Caroline argue about the wisdom of sending Damon to question Maxfield about Jesse. Elena is frustrated – everyone knows Caroline hates him. Caroline just wants Elena to awknowledge that she’s dating a psychopath.
In the lab, Damon has the grand idea to inject Maxfield with a fun variety of unpleasant diseases unless he starts talking. He says if Maxfield tells him what he needs to know, he’ll open a wrist and spare his life. Maxfield is not forthcoming.

In the walk-in fridge at the Grille, Katherine and friends are having their own little party. Nadia grabs Matt’s head and calls Gregor forth, and they learn that after murdering Silas, Gregor’s next mission was to kill Katherine. Nadia is surprised, and Stefan looks as though he wishes he had more liquor. Katherine uses the fancy-ass gypsy knife to stab Matt, and effectively kills Gregor. Nadia is outraged, and runs out. Katherine is not sympathetic; her only child deserves better in her opinion. You have to hand it to Kat - she has excellent taste in men. Stefan, Damon, Elijah…the only man she didn’t want was Klaus. The woman knows her stuff. (Why put a Traveler inside of Matt at all if the storyline was going to be so limited and over so quickly?)
At the dorm party, Bonnie makes friends with the old lady who passed on earlier. She can see and speak to those on both sides, being the anchor and exisiting in both places. Jeremy interrupts and Bonnie gets flustered – I imagine it would be crazy confusing.
Tired of being pumped full of rabies and the bubonic plague, Maxfield tells Damon that he’s been trying to create a new vampire breed – one that doesn’t survive on human blood.
At the party, Caroline and Jesse kiss while they dance and Jesse bites her. He gets really hungry and leaves really fast. Elena and Aaron bond over their dead families. She leaves to call Damon and tell him not to kill Maxfield, because he’s the only family Aaron has left.

Just as Damon is about to feed Maxfield blood and heal him, Jesse shows up demanding to know why he’s desperate to feed on the girl he likes. He sees Damon’s blood, all warm and leaky, and attacks him. Damon isn’t worried initially, because he’s so much older. He realizes pretty quick, though, that whatever experiments Maxfield did on Jesse made him far stronger than the average vampire. His life is in danger.
They crash into the hall and Jesse is busy biting Damon’s neck. Elena runs up and Damon tells her to kill Jesse before he rips his head off. Elena stakes him with a piece of the broken door just as Caroline arrives. Caroline, of course, is pissed. She tells Elena the “old Elena” would have given Jesse a chance. (Um, I’m thinking not if Stefan or Damon were at risk, Care.)
At the Grille, Stefan finds at note left at their table, from Katherine to Nadia. After a being nosy and reading most of it, he realizes it’s a suicide note.

Outside, on top of the clock tower, Katherine struggles with her decision to jump. She has to turn her back and fall backward. Before she hits the ground Stefan catches her, always the hero, and demands to know why she wants to end her life. She explains that she’s dying, aging very quickly, and she only has a couple of months. Stefan studies her for a moment before simply saying, “You’re Katherine Pierce. Suck it up.” He walks away. Katherine looks intrigued and hopeful – maybe Stefan cares about her more than he lets on? (After watching this scene I was thouroughly manipulated by the writers into wishing Stefan and Katherine will get together. I mean, I know Stefan is just a nice guy in general, but human Katherine might start showing some redeeming qualities – she’s already attached to Nadia.)
Bonnie and Jeremy are trying to get it on when Jesse appears in the room. Bonnie realizes he’s dead and about to pass on, and does her screaming in pain bit. Jeremy is panicked. She explains she feels each supernatural death, but it’s worth it to be alive again. Jeremy doesn’t look happy, but he’s a teenage boy and they go right back to having sex.
Caroline and Elena are cleaning up. Caroline apologizes for being a bitch, but repeats her concerns about how unstable and lethal Damon is. (DUN DUN DUN.)

In the lab, Damon is organizing everything and plans to wipe Maxfield’s memory. He sees a blood bag in the fridge with a number on it, and it sparks a memory. He had his own number, sixty years ago. Maxfield guesses that Damon was an Augustine vampire and breaks free of his restraints. Before Damon can subdue him he hits a panic button and vervane gas fills the room. Damon drops, and Maxfield (suddenly seeming very much the evil scientist and not the kindly adoptive dad) says Augustine will be happy to have him back.
Damon wakes in a cell, and sees his name scratched into the wall, and remembers being tortured sixty years previously.
Thoughts: Will Damon switch off his humanity? I mean, he has better control than Stefan, but torture is torture and maybe it’s his turn to quit feeling stuff. Are Stefan and Katherine going to start spending quality time, or will Stefan be too busy trying to save Damon? Are Elena and Stefan, working together to save Damon, going to have issues? Is someone going to turn Matt into something supernatural so he can stop being a bus boy and start having a life? Is someone going to find a way to save Katherine? (PLEASE?)
